Not all selfie sticks are made equal. You may think you can pop over to Amazon and buy any old one, but that’s not the case. Cheaper models may not fit to your smartphone properly and send it crashing towards the floor.

We know it can look a bit touristy, but there’s some real advantages to using a selfie stick. You can capture wider images of yourself, shoot more stable video and you don’t have to have that embarrassing conversation where you ask a stranger to take a photo of you.

In this article we’ll give you a buying guide on things to look out for, and our pick of the best selfie sticks on the market at the moment.

How to buy the best selfie stick

Are there different types of selfie stick?

Yes there are. If you do a brief Amazon search you’ll pull up dozens of different designs. Most will come with a mount that adjusts to the width of your phone so you can securely hold it in a horizontal position. More advanced models will see that mount rotate 180 degrees so you can take photos and videos and different angles. At the very high end, some will support action cameras such as GoPros.

What features should I consider?

You’ll definitely want one that’s portable. Most models will fold down to around 20cm in length, but some more expensive sticks will get even shorter. Another point to think about is the length the stick can reach to. We recommend buying one that goes beyond 75cm, as that should be able to take all the images you want it to.

Bluetooth connectivity and camera control

A selfie stick is also a remote control for you to take pictures. There are two ways you can do this: either via Bluetooth or a cable with a 3.5mm jack. With the bluetooth models you just sync the stick to your smartphone and you should be away. With the cable option, you simply plug it into your smartphone’s headphone port and again, you should be good to go.
